  • B.C. council stiffens disciplinary approach
© Thompson’s World Insurance News 2009. No reproduction without written consent.
So far this year the website of the Insurance Council of B.C. lists seven suspended brokers — more than in the previous four years.
But that doesn’t mean there is more misconduct in the industry.
Council executive director Gerry Matier said the apparent increase is partly because the council is moving to faster online notices of disciplinary actions rather than releasing them in infrequent paper bulletins.
Another reason for the increase in suspensions is a more aggressive policing policy.
In the past, investigations into complaints would usually be dropped if the brokers in question left their jobs. That option is gone.
“We are going to take disciplinary action and we’re going to publish so that people who have done what we consider to be serious offences will not have the ability to simply go, ‘OK I’ve turned in my licence so I’m pretty safe here as long as I never come back in again,’” Mr. Matier said.
“Our position is going to be no, we are going to pursue it, we are going to take disciplinary action and we are going to publish.”
